Snapshot Sunday: Beach Walks with Lanta Dogs

Home to over 60 cats and some 30 dogs, Lanta Animal Welfare in Koh Lanta is the only animal care facility in the region. Over the past decade they have treated and sterilized over 8,000 cats and dogs and have placed animals in forever homes around the globe. We had only planned to volunteer here every few days, but have found ourselves going back daily to walk the dogs and cuddle the kitties.

Snapshot Sunday: Getting Sweet on Malaysian Deserts

Better known as ABC, ais kacang is a desert commonly served in Brunei, Singapore, and Malaysia. Most versions include shaved ice, red beans, palm seeds, sweet corn, and rose syrup. Ours also had grass jelly (which tasted exactly like root beer flavored gummy spaghetti) and was topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Snapshot Sunday: Kuala Lumpur’s Petronas Towers

Once the tallest buildings in the world, the Petronas Twin Towers add postmodern flair to the Kuala Lumpur skyline. The glass facade was built to resemble Islamic art and reflects the country’s predominantly Muslim population. The two-story skybridge that connects the towers weighs a massive 750 tons.

Snapshot Sunday: Waterfalling on Tioman Island

Just off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia is Pulau Tioman, a popular holiday spot for locals and Singaporeans. If you venture south near Kampong Merkut you’ll find the Asah Waterfall, surrounded on all sides by some pretty intense jungle. Worried about the giant monitor lizards and 25 species of snake? Luckily the path that leads here is fully paved, making it an easy walk from the village.

Snapshot Sunday: A Saunter around Marina Bay

Built in 2010, the Marina Bay Sands Hotel has quickly become a symbol of Singapore. Its three 55-story towers have over 2,500 luxurious rooms, and the whole structure is crowned by a giant boat with an infinity pool looking out over the city. (Alas, the pool is only available to guests!)
