Hiking the 17km (10 mile) track to Tama Lakes is a good way to see Tongariro, New Zealand’s oldest National Park. In addition to ski fields and the North’s only glaciers, it’s also home to three active volcanoes – Mount Ruapehu (pictured), Mount Ngauruhoe, and Mount Tongariro.
The park served as the set of Mordor in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, and nearby Ngauruhoe was shot as Mount Doom.
